Boaters can make a difference

A campaign has been launched to encourage boaters - primarily those who live on their boats - to register to vote and take part in the general  election on December 12th.  The campaign - under the name of Votey McVoatface -  identifies a number of marginal constituencies where a boater vote could make a real difference.

The campaign website says:

"A Marginal?

Wat-er we talking a-boat?

A marginal constituency is where the current MP had a narrow victory in the last election. Like Southampton Itchen where, in 2017, the MP won by only 31 votes. In the UK there are 54 MPs with less than 1,000 vote majorities. Votes count for more in a marginal constituency.

If you live on a boat and cruise in any of the following areas, there is a good chance you have a connection with a marginal constituency: Bristol, London, Hebden Bridge/Todmorden, Leeds, Milton Keynes and Nottingham. If you have no fixed address, have moored up in any of these places or used services in the area, you can register to vote there now
."

Successful first day of Boat Share Show

With decent weather and plenty of visitors, the first day of the Autumn Boat Share Share Show was a considerable success.

Partly as a result, three of the boats - Breaking Dawn, Happy Days and Spellbound - have now left Overwater so that their owners can enjoy cruising for the rest of their time on board.  The Boat Share Show opens at 10am tomorrow (Sunday 8th) and finishes at 4pm.

The RNLI Festival got under way this evening and promises to be an even greater attraction tomorrow than in previous years.  The highlight of the afternoon will be the raft race round the marina.

Another boat attends the Show

Happy Days, managed by Carefree Cruising, has made it to the Show this weekend.  I knew it was a possibility but it had not been confirmed before we came up here.

Details of shares available in all the boats at the Show can be found here.

Getting ready for the Boat Share Show

We're busy getting ready for the Autumn Boat Share Show at Overwater Marina this coming wekend (7th & 8th).

Also keen to see the new boat from Ownashare, Speedwell, making its Show debut.

As usual, we'll be manning the Welcome Tent and we would love to see you as you arrive so that we can give you a list of the boats on view and answer any questions.

The Show starts at 10am on both days, finishing at 5pm on the Saturday and 4pm on the Sunday.  We'll be on site earlier than that, though, to take advantage of the excellent breakfast served at 'The Cafe at Bridge 80' in the Marina building from 8.30am!

Boat Show takes off

The first National Boat Share Show to be held at the new Dunchurch Pools Marina literally took off this weekend.

On the move - after being blown over
by the wind, our marquee was retrieved
and moved to a sheltered spot.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
Not just one, but two marquees were uprooted by the wind!  Ours was the first to go - much to the surprise of our dog, Layla - but we were safely relocated between the Ownashare and BCBM exhibition trailers.

The second to go was the visitor marquee, where there were tables and chairs for visitors to sit, chat and enjoy their refreshments from the excellent J18 Burger Van.

Fortunately no-one was hurt in either incident, although the visitor marquee itself did sustain some damage.  It left the tables and chairs in the open, giving a bistro feel to the area.

The wind had dropped by the Sunday morning and everyone was a lot more comfortable and outside seating was pleasant in the sunny spells.

In the end, the Show had not just 14 boats but 16 on view - the late entries were Little Dawn managed by BCBM and Willow, managed by Carefree Cruising.

Visitor numbers were a little down on previous years, but there was plenty of serious interest in shared ownership, and the management companies reported shares sold and viewings booked.  So the first national Boat Share Show at this new venue can definitely be considered a success.

The date for next year's Spring Boat Share Show Show has now been set - it will be back to the corresponding week to previous years - 18th & 19th April 2020.

The date for the Autumn Boat Share Show at Overwater marina has already been fixed as  7th & 8th September 2019.  As usual it will run in association with the RNLI Festival.

Fourteen boats on view at Boat Share Show

There will be 14 shared ownership narrowboats on view at the National Boat Share Show this weekend - 4th & 5th May.  A full list of the shares available in all the boats is here.

The newest boat on view will be Liberté, managed by BCBM, with a full share costing £9,995.  The oldest will be Shearwater, launched in 1998 and managed by Ownashare, with a 1/12th share on offer at £1,200.

Some of the boats have smaller shares on offer, such as  Winding Down, managed by Carefree Cruising and launched in 2009, with a 1/24th yellow share at just £750.

Some of the boats also have shares with a school holiday priority for booking time aboard.  A brief description of the various ways of booking time on board your boat can be found on our FAQ page, here.

This year's Show is being held at Dunchurch Pools Marina for the first time. The Marina is on the North Oxford Canal near the village of Olney, and there's a map showing how to get to it from the A45 Coventry to Daventry road on this website, here.

The Show opens at 10am on both days, finishing at 5pm on the Saturday and 4pm on the Sunday.  Car parking and admission are free.

As usual, we will be manning the Welcome Desk in the marquee, so please do call in and see us - and feel free to ask us any questions.

More sort options on shares list

The list of currently available shares on this site has been modified to give additional sort options on half shares and shares with school holiday options.

Half shares are indicated (by a 'Yes' in the Half share column) where a share is half the normal 1/12th - 1/10th or 8%, that is 1/24th - 1/20th or 4%.

School holiday shares are marked when the share on offer either currently has a school holiday preference or where one is available.

The list can now be sorted on any of these details:

  • Boat name
  • Price
  • Half share
  • School holiday share
  • Length
  • Layout
  • Stern type
  • Number of berths
  • Launch date (when new)
  • Management and where the boat is offered
  • Whether pets are allowed
  • Whether smoking is allowed in the boat

The search facility now includes:

  • Minimum price
  • Maximum price
  • Minimum length
  • Maximum length
  • Whether the saloon or the main bedroom is nearest to the bow
  • What type of stern
  • Minimum number of berths
  • Maximum number of berths
  • Minimum age
  • Maximum age
  • Whether pets are allowed
  • Whether smoking is allowed in the boat
The shares list is updated on most days to reflect the latest changes in shares available.   To compile the list, we monitor the websites of BCBM, boatshare.co.uk, Carefree Cruising, J D Boat Services and Ownashare

Our list is for information only - boatshare4u.co.uk does not sell shares.

National Boat Share Show has new venue and date

This year's National Boat Share Show will have a new location and a new date.

The Show will take place at Dunchurch Pools Marina on Saturday and Sunday 4th & 5th May.  The Marina is on the North Oxford Canal, not far from Braunston Junction.  The full address is Dunchurch Pools Marina, Onley, Rugby CV23 8AN.

This year's event is being organised by the four shared ownership management companies - BCBM, Carefree Cruising, J D Boat Services and Ownashare.

Although I'm no longer involved in the organisation of the Show, I have agreed to be the contact point for general information about the Show and Show details will appear on this site - so my details and this site will appear on advertisements for the Show. We have started a list of boats that will be on view and will add further ones when we  hear about them.

Pippa and I will also be manning the Welcome Desk at the Show as in previous years.
